Page 1 of 5 Plagiarism Introduction
Northern Grid and Northumbria Learning received funding from the QCA to investigate Plagiarism in schools. Plagiarism has always been seen as a problem for Higher and Further Education. Increasingly it is being seen as a problem in schools as well. Much of this is due to the increased access to the Internet. Many of the universities in the UK use an application called Turnitin to check students work for plagiarism. This project aimed to find out if the application would be useful in schools.
The aims of the project were:
- To investigate plagiarism in schools, is it a problem?
- Evaluate Turnitin to see if it is appropriate for schools.
- To provide support materials for schools
The funding from QCA was used to:
- Provide Turnitin to all of the schools in the project for 1 year
- Provide all schools with £2000 to support implementation of the project
- To cover management costs for Northern Grid and Northumbria Learning
All of Northern Grid's partner Local Authorities were asked to nominate a school to take part in the project. Schools were invited to a meeting to find out about the project. All schools were asked to work with 2 classes in KS4. The focus was on English and History. Over the course of the project KS3 and 6th form classes were added.
