Are you considering international collaboration and cultural exchange for your students? Would you like to work towards the International Schools Award (ISA)? Do you want some ideas to support global citizenship and community cohesions? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘Yes’, then consider signing up to eTwinning!
eTwinning enables teachers, pupils and students in 32 European countries to work together using Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
It is the European Commission’s partner-finding and online collaboration tool. As a school or college (working with pupils and students between the ages of 3 and 20) you can register your details, create a profile, search for partners and engage in online partnerships - absolutely free of charge.
Teachers and their students can form short or long term partnerships, collaborate on a whole range of curriculum based projects in any subject area and use an array of exciting and innovative ICT tools. There is no administration process or time restriction – you choose how and when you want to work.
The eTwinning site has 3 main sections:
The public portal has a wealth of information to support partnerships including ideas for ‘icebreaker’ (starter) projects as wells as detailed information on more involved projects – completely free for teachers to use and adapt to their own needs.
The private or secure area accessible once teachers are registered allows teachers to search for partners and communicate with each other without any commitment.
However, once partners have communicated and decided on a project, eTwinning the provides a free and secure online space (Twinspace) which allows teachers and pupils to work and share together using a variety of tools including being able to upload files, communicate through forums, write blogs, and work collaboratively on wikis.
eTwinning also supports the professional development of teachers, helping them in a variety of ways through such thins as Professional development Workshops (PDWs), online Learning Events and other training (for more details, click on ‘Professional development’ tab in the eTwinning home page).
Each country has their own National Support Service (NSS) - the UK NSS is part of the British Council. Each country also has a collection of ‘Ambassadors’ – practising teachers from all over the country experienced in working with international partners who are prepared to help others get started as well as provide support throughout partnerships if necessary. You can find a regional list here and contact them through the UK NSS (
