Some of you may be wondering what the benefits are of using iPods in class so here are some examples of innovative schools who have been using them already.
Apple's Learning Interchange website has a huge section dedicated solely to using the iPhone/iPod Touch in education. It largely focuses on innovative ways of using the iPod in various subject areas and recommends applications to download. Well worth a look.
Ollie Bray, National Adviser for Learning and Technology Futures at Learning and Teaching Scotland, recently highlighted a superb comprehensive list of educational apps from ICT@C
Learning in Hand is a great website, especially for those who are apprehensive about technology. There are a lot of tips, tricks and tutorials covering every aspect of the iPod in an educational context. The site also includes a great blog with articles and news relating to the iPod in education.
This article is a great first stop on the road to development for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It not only covers the development of the apps themselves but also higher level concepts such as immersion, planning and visualising. Also, rather than focusing solely on app creation it also links to frameworks for developing an iPod-specific website.
This is a really interesting article. GCSEPod has created over 300 audio-visual podcasts covering 8 subjects (over 150 hours of content), for use on iPods in the classroom or at home. This is a wide-ranging and valuable resource for students, using professionally narrated, teacher-written content with original supporting images.
I'm looking forward to more about your interactive work using ipod touch and iphones. Do you think, though, that the absence of Flash on these devices will be an obstacle to overcome?
Doug - Initially I did think the absence of Flash on iPod/iTouch was an obstacle (I am predominantly a Flash developer myself) - especially having to learn a new language on a new development platform.
I can understand most of Apple's reasons for doing this however (potentially malicious code etc).
Good news though is that Adobe are planning to include the ability to convert Flash applications into Apple compatible apps in the upcoming Flash CS5, so it looks like not all hope is lost.
In response to my much earlier comment I made, I'm sad to see that Apple have effectively banned Flash CS5 from being used as an app development platform.
