Improvements to E-Safety for Regional Schools
As part of its ongoing developments and improvements in providing safe online environments for teachers, pupils and other users, Northern Grid is proposing to establish a new automatic monitoring system for web and internet use.
This system will be set up in partnership with Easynet, the regional broadband provider, Northern Grid, Local Authorities and local police authorities.
The system will compare all websites accessed from establishments, linked to the Northern Grid regional broadband network, with those classified by the Internet Watch Foundation as illegal.
It should be noted that illegal sites are those which involve child abuse, race hate and incitement to violence.
Any attempt to access an illegal site will be flagged by the automatic monitoring system and forwarded to the appropriate police force as a potential illegal act.
The appropriate police force will then put its normal investigation processes in place and follow up the attempt to access illegal materials. This may involve a criminal investigation resulting in prosecution.
In order for this new automatic system to be activated several steps need to be undertaken.
1. Local Authority Local Children’s Safeguarding Boards need to be consulted on this process.
2. Head Teachers, Governing Bodies, Teachers, Classroom Assistants, other school and Local Authority employees need to be consulted on this development.
3. Unions need to be consulted.
4. Once the consultation process is complete and the development approved, all employees will need to be informed that the system has become live and is actively monitoring illegal use.
5. Local Police Authorities need to establish processes and procedures to deal with any alerts of potential illegal use.
