Maths Policy Document
Mathematics February 2002
Introduction
This policy has been written by the subject co-ordinator. It has been discussed and agreed by the whole staff in February 2002 and approved by the Governing Body. It will be reviewed at six monthly intervals.
The policy sets out the school’s aims with respect to this area of the curriculum and outlines the strategies for the delivery of the Mathematics curriculum. It will provide the basis for the school’s future development of provision for this subject area.
Mathematics will be taught as a part of students entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. The programmes of study laid out by the National Curriculum will be modified to give all students relevant and appropriately challenging work in Key Stages 3 and 4. This may involve the use of materials and programmes of study from earlier key stages as well as the use of materials provided to implement the National Numeracy Strategy.
Rationale
The school aims to teach students to become confident and competent users of numbers and measures and to have an understanding of the number system. It also aims to help students to develop their ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts.
Equal Opportunities and Access
All students will have equal access to the Mathematics curriculum regardless of issues relating to race gender or disability. The balance of the curriculum offered may be varied to cater for the needs of individual students.

• Students will be grouped by means of the P Scales.
• Medium term plans will be prepared by teachers- planning will be drawn from the schemes of work prepared by the subject co-ordinator.
• Targets will be set for all students and written into medium term planning.
• Information and Communication Technology will be used to support the delivery of the curriculum where it is appropriate to do so.
• Students will be offered opportunities to generalise Mathematics skills learnt and to practice them in a variety of different situations
• Staff will be offered support and training as needed to implement the curriculum.
• The Mathematics coordinator will review the planning and teaching of Mathematics each term.
• The subject will be monitored annually and a written report will be prepared for the governing body.
Assessment
Assessment procedures will provide information regarding students progress and inform further planning. These will be developed in line with other curriculum areas and form a part of a whole school approach to assessment recording and reporting. Assessment using small stages assessment will be completed at the end of each module.
