A planning document from Deedmore school, Coventry
Following the INSET day on Individual Education Plans, the staff group agreed on the following format:
- IEPs will consist of 3 targets for each individual, one target each for the areas of literacy, numeracy and PSHE.
- IEPs should contain targets additional or extra to targets set in group planning or schemes of work- TARGETS SET ON IEPs SHOULD BE “DOOR-OPENERS”.
- All IEPs should be SMART (ie specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed).
- IEP targets must be shared with all staff who are in contact with the pupil (including the multi-disciplinary team) and for carousel activities.
- IEP targets must be shared with pupils themselves and with parents, lunch-time supervisors, transport escorts etc.
- IEP targets must be clearly visible within the classroom- in an A5 plastic wallet, kept on the child’s work table. (Class 1 will continue to use their current arrangement for display of IEPs on the wall).
- IEP targets must be reviewed at least every half term- more regularly when a learning objective has been achieved before this time.
- All staff are responsible for working on IEP targets, either with the pupil as an individual or as part of a small group. Targets should be worked on in a cross-curricular way throughout the working week.
- Supply staff should take time before the day’s work to familiarise themselves with IEP targets for pupils in their class.
- All staff are responsible for recording pupils’ progress in relation to their IEP targets, at least once a week but more frequently if significant achievements have been made or difficulties encountered.
- Where a target has not been achieved after a term, serious thought needs to be given as to why- if it is not due to absence, illness or other extenuating circumstances, the possibility that the target is too hard needs to be considered. In such a case, it needs to be further broken down into smaller achievable steps.
- The proformas used will be trialled for a term and the area of IEPs will be re-visited at staff level.
