infantrymans diaryThis diary kept by William Falcus in World War I has been made available by Tyne and Wear Archives. There is a scanned version, transcript and other documents, along with suggested classroom activities for literacy and history tageted at key stage 2, 3 and 4.

World War I – An Infantryman’s Diary

William Falcus was born in Sandyford, Newcastle, on 6 June 1892. In 1913 he emigrated to Canada and in June 1915, aged 23, he enlisted with 63rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Edmonton. By June 1916 he was fighting on the Western Front and wounded twice. William returned to Canada in 1919 with his new English wife, Marjorie. He died in 1964.

William’s diary was donated to Tyne and Wear Archive Service by his family. The reference number is TWAS DX 228: Papers relating to the Military Service of Sgt. William Falcus (1892 – 1964).

I am very curious who submitted this information. This is my grandfather and I have only seen photocopies of some of this informtion. I would like to know who has the original and what other information they may have. Thank you.

Hi Brad. We've been in contact with Tyne & Wear Archives and they suggest sending an enquiry to archives@twmuseums.org.uk The original documents are held by the archives and most of the information is available on the website.
