About British Pathe
The British Pathe Archive is available over the broadband connection to teachers and pupils in Northern Grid’s partner Local Authorities. This arrangement, the first of its kind in the world, provides schools with access to 3,500 hours of digitised newsreel film covering events from the death of Victoria to the birth of space travel. It is for use by teachers and pupils in school and for collaboration between schools across the National Education Network. The provision of this wonderful resource is the outcome of a partnership between the RBCs and British Pathe and is provided to schools without charges.
The 3,500 hours of film are available in high-quality versions to enable their use in whole-class teaching, with whiteboards, in ‘PowerPoints’ and for printing. In addition the archive provides 2,000,000 still photographs for teachers and pupils to work with. Uniquely, the RBC/British Pathe Schools Licence allows teachers and children to edit and re-present the material creatively and critically. The British Pathe Archive is of course just that – a full historical archive and not a set of resources pre-selected for school use; it contains reports on many aspects of life - celebrations, the environment, technology, politics, disasters and war. Teachers need to be aware of the range of material in the archive and take decisions about how best to use it with the children and students in their school.
The resources are provided within an agreement for Educational Use and are not for publication on the WWW, for use in commercial enterprises or for distribution beyond the school or the National Education Network environments. Schools are recommended to read the Terms and Conditions of the Schools Licence and bring the attention of teachers and pupils to the Acceptable Usage that is required when using these archive materials.
Northern Grid has worked with teachers in the region to develop examples of the ways in which this resource can be used, as well as developing support materials and exchanging good practice. Some of the work produced in this project is available from the link below, as Pathe clips are not able to be used on the Internet this is a secure area which recognised IP addressed of schools in the partner LAs. Northern Grid hopes that this area of the site will continue to grow and would welcome feedback and contributions.
The British Pathe website is accessible at www.britishpathe.com where you can investigate the archive and download copies of the files.

We wish your school every success with using what we believe to be a truly inspiring teaching and learning resource and one which demonstrates the value of broadband services in meeting the aspirations of the next generation.

Examples of Work
Teachers from the Northern Grid region have been working with Pathe and have produced examples showing what they can be used for. On this page you can find examples of the work they did. The examples include lesson plans and clips they have produced, as well as links to the British Pathe files they used.
The project involved all key stages and a number of different subject areas. In some instances the teachers used the original British Pathe clips as a stimulus to introduce new topics. In other cases the clips were edited either by the teacher or by pupils.
Most of the schools used Movie Maker 2 to edit the clips. This is a free piece of software. Teachers found this software easy to use and pupils from Key Stages 1 to 4 were able to learn how to use it.
All the teachers enjoyed the project and believed the work benefited their pupils. They described how British Pathe was a cross curricular resource which promoted creativity, concentration and motivation. They also talked about how using the resource could address different learning styles.
As part of the project some schools were able to work with John Davitt. He was able to give them more ideas about how to use digital video in the classroom. For more information visit his website.
Northern Grid hopes that this section will continue to grow, with schools and teachers sharing the work they have done. If you would like to contribute to this area please contact
