Northern Grid is keen to promote and deliver systems which keep users safe online. The filtering used across the Northern Grid regional broadband network delivers high levels of protection, filtering access to highly inappropriate websites and content. Northern Grid believes that head teachers, governors and teachers are best placed to make local decisions on the level of filtering and blocking which matches the ethos and culture of their schools. To this end, the default settings on filtering system delivered by Northern Grid can be changed at school level, either increasing or relaxing the level of blocking within the default setting. This flexibility is delivered through a local system served by a Cachepilot based within the school.
Northern Grid believes that the best way of keeping users safe is to provide access to pro-active educational opportunities which enable users to develop a high understanding of the many benefits of online resources whilst realising that some sites are offensive or unsafe. In addition, Northern Grid promotes the use of forensic software systems which can enable safe use of social networking and other sites which may be blocked under some filtering systems.
