Heads and governors need to be confident that the school uses internet connections to the outside world which are designed to ensure the SAFETY of pupils and staff. The Internet is full of valuable resources and opportunities, but can be potentially dangerous. Because it is unregulated, the Internet poses many threats of which pornography and paedophilia are merely two of the more widely recognised. The Northern Grid for Learning provides a dedicated discrete network which allow access to the wealth of the World Wide Web and protects schools by controlling access and filtering content.
Email Filtering
All emails on the MyMail system as used by the Netmedia Learning platform are filtered for inappropriate language by subject line, body text and attachment to prevent inappropriate use. Any such emails are blocked and not delivered. The email is rereouted to a designated administration email account for further investigation.
The MyMail system is also protected by anti-spam and anti-virus software, preventing time-wasting ‘spam’ and viruses from impacting on staff and pupils time. Expertly managed firewalls protect the network from malicious attacks from outside and inside the wide area network.
Personal data and files which are kept securely stored on the Northern Grid Learning Platform and are backed up on a regular basis to provide data security and recovery.
Web Filtering
The Cachepilot web filtering service installed in the majority of schools within Northern Grid currently uses a 3rd party filtering database N2H2 provides by secure computing. This database is currently being upgraded to Smartfilter which provides a comprehensive, current and extensive filtering service. The Smartfilter filtering services are in the final stages of obtaining BECTA accreditation.
