The presentation which was submitted for this award was the one delivered by the team at the final judging for the project. It was created and produced entirely by the team, Assistance was given by the CLC to demonstrate techniques of morphing images in Photoshop, animating still sequences in Premiere, using Audacity for sound editing and some aspects of PowerPoint. The team members then applied these skills to their topic and produced the final presentation.
The project entry is both visionary and practical; it demonstrates an understanding of the needs of the local community, promotes this part of the region as a significant centre for sporting development and emphasises the importance of sustainability.

During the summer term holidays we saw the development of our Friendship Garden, designed for the children as a place to rest, have time to themselves, time to have fun and meet new friends. Over the Autumn term our Friendship Monitors have grown and become more confident and we have seen the introduction of Friendship Friday where we try hard to make at least one new friend.
Mrs Bury runs a junior poetry club and they have taken the topic of Friendship as a focus for their poetry writing. The girls meet once a week and work together or independently to create wonderful and inspiring poetic words.
Every alternate Monday evening the Year 6 ICT club girls meet for an hour after school and were given the task to develop their knowledge further from their half hour weekly ICT lesson to create a PowerPoint presentation of our friendship poems. The girls spent time collecting their poems together and planning what and how they would present it. They decided on appropriate colours, pictures and videos. They sought help on choric speaking and learnt how to use the digital video camera. Sophie, Katie, Fleur and Rachel were very dedicated to this task and concentrated hard, delegating the work and then bringing it back and discussing further improvements. The girls learnt how to add films, sounds, animations and a 12 second transition in between each slide for maximum impact. The team during their hectic lunchtimes also tried to find the time to add some additional work on this project. Really well done Girls!
Help The girls learnt new skills from their weekly 30 min ICT lesson but the ICT club work was all done independently.

Linking hospital with school
Background
Charlotte is currently 7 years old and has had to attend a hospital in Newcastle three times a week for dialysis. She attended normal school the other two days a week. When her school heard about our work, they asked if it would be possible to link her normal lessons to the hospital. Over a period of a few weeks, the hospital was contacted with regard to downloading, installing and testing the software (all that is required is an internet connection and headphones, preferably with a microphone). Meanwhile, Charlotte's teacher worked with the CLC to learn how to make best use of the virtual classroom tool.
The first lesson
On 8th May, 2006, Charlotte, along with the teaching assistant at the hospital, logged on to the live classroom - the link to this is in a secure virtual learning environment in which her teacher is also able to put other resources for Charlotte to use. The lesson was Music, and Charlotte was able to listen to her teacher, hear the singing and also contribute, both by writing messages or by speaking. There is an edited recording of the lesson which includes photos and video footage of her and the children in the class on http://vle.stocktonclc.co.uk/course/view.php?id=6 (click on 'Log on as a guest'). There are also examples of Press releases and a recording of a local radio interview.
Feedback
Charlotte was engaged throughout the lesson and took an active part in it, just as she would if she had been in the real classroom. Her classmates were aware of her 'presence' and included her in the lesson too. The teacher was able to teach 'normally' after the initial 'logging on' to the room and making sure Charlotte could communicate. The technology was 'seamless' and although the teacher had spent some time (but not a great deal) learning how to use it initially, she can see that it has easily been integrated into her lesson and can be used much more.
Further lessons
Charlotte enjoyed the first lesson so much that she asked if she could join the Literacy lesson that afternoon which had not been originally planned, but was able to join as the teacher felt confident that she did not have to make any changes to her lesson to accommodate this. Having been part of that lesson in which a new topic was introduced, the teacher was confident that when Charlotte returned to school the next day, she knew about the new topic and was able to continue with it as if she had been at school when it was originally taught instead of having to try to 'catch up'.
A second teacher has now used the technology in a Numeracy lesson, and within that, the teacher was able to allow Charlotte to write on the whiteboard in the classroom (Charlotte was using a laptop in the hospital). All the children in the class were able to see Charlotte's writing and not only were they amazed, but the work Charlotte was writing (using a number line to subtract) was reinforced for the other children too.
The Future
Charlotte had a kidney transplant (the donated kidney was from her father!) in September and she is now back at school and does not need to join her lessons virtually! - but during this difficult time, through the use of technology, she has been able to maintain continuity not just in her learning but also in the social sense of being part of her class.
With respect to Kath, Charlotte's teacher, she is now working on another project with Stockton CLC on live remote observations where we are working with Durham University and ITT students.
Churchill College, North Tyneside, won this category
Created by: This was a teacher award and the entry was submitted by Chris Wilde. The project involved year 9 students.
Packages used: Front Page MS Word Wikipedia and various websites Audacity Channel 4 Clipbank and Revelation Sight and Sound
Objectives: This was a four week homework project which culminated in an afternoon at one of our local CLCs. We have a paperless system for homework using our VLE and we used this to allow pupils to access and hand in their homework. We decided that a good final piece for a project would be a video and decided to create a unit using the Commonwealth War Graves search engine.
Pupils were given guidance for their research using a web page with hyperlinks to various sites and text input fields where they could store the information about their soldier's regiment, when he died and the battle he died in. This information then led to a written presentation of their findings. Research was completed over a four week period and work was checked and comments added by the teacher using our VLE's paperless Homework system.
The award was presented by Mel Philipson.
With the presentation written we then spent an afternoon at our local CLC where the pupils downloaded their presentations from the VLE and spoke them into a microphone which recorded their presentation as an MP3, after guidance on the software program Audacity. They then looked at the various video resources available through our LEA's subscription to Channel 4 Clipbank. They found videos that would tie into their presentation and earmarked them. Then the pupils were given guidance on how to create presentations in Revelations Sight and Sound.
When the video presentations were completed they were added to our Streaming Media Server and made available to the entire school community via the VLE.
