British Pathe Archive ~ St Bernadette’s Primary Lesson Notes

The World War 2 project St Bernadette’s Primary school worked on involved Year 6 pupils. It built on work carried out in the previous year. Most of the work was carried out as part of an after school club.

The British Pathe clips were used as stimulus material and the pupils then produced very detailed storyboards. As part of their literacy work, they produced letters written as if from evacuees. These were added to clips to sound like the children reminiscing. Other work was produced to describe how children used to collect shrapnel.

The school also used footage taken of a Year 4/5 trip to Eden Camp. Pupils were involved in acting and singing and this video was interwoven with British Pathe clips.

The school found using the resources very valuable. They are planning to work with them further on some football related literacy activities with one of the aims being the motivation of boys.

Summer school projects carried out by the school linked to work the pupils were doing on Everest and Space. Resources from British Pathe were used as stimulus material. Pupils used a Digital Blue video camera to produce stop frame animations which were interwoven with clips from British Pathe. Pupils carried out all the work themselves, producing props and scenery, storyboarding and taking the video.

Pupils use Movie Maker 2 to edit the clips and to produce all of the animations and sound tracks.
