Tyne & Wear. Ideally situated on the mouth of the River Tyne, next to
the Port of Tyne Authority. |

Entrance
to the Sawmill |
 |
Lorries
transport the timber into the mill, and then timber orders are sent
out to customers by the same method |
 |
The
administration of orders for timber are dealt with by staff housed in
the sawmill office.
|
 |
Southern's
Sawmill is able to mill exceptionally large pieces of timber such as
that imported from Canada and America. A member of staff is feeding
the timber into the cutting machine, which is made easier by the use
of rollers
|
 |
This
sequence of images shows timber being cut to different sizes using a
bandsaw and the bandsaw being changed. They are changed frequently and
are very expensive

 |
Decking
is one of the products produced in this Sawmill. Gardening programmes
have made this form of surface fashionable and in much demand
|
 |
In
order to prevent the processes of decay and weathering timber is preserved
by forcing organic solvents into the wood under pressure
