Poetry Case studies

Introduction

Andy Croft is a local poet who has vast experience of working in schools with children and teachers.  He was commissioned by the Northern Grid for Learning to work with three schools in order to enable children to write poetry which would be included in the Northern Grid’s Literacy Football Project. The poetry produced had to fit in with specific National Literacy Strategy Objectives.  So for example, Riverside Reserves was written to be used for Year 6 Term 1 Objective 10.  Andy worked for a day with a group of Lower Sixth English Language A Level students, for half a day each with two Year 6 classes in a primary school and for a day at Middlesbrough Football Club with a Year 6 class.  As I observed Andy over the three days I became aware of how helpful it would be if other teachers could see his method of enabling children to write poetry.  Although it is impossible to reproduce the enthusiasm, energy and atmosphere of the three days, the following case studies are written in an attempt to assist and inspire teachers.
