Gateshead Millennium Bridge Maths lesson Plan C |
Year / Class : Y5/6 |
Numeracy: |
Mental / Oral Teaching Objectives: Use, read and write metric units Convert larger to smaller units (scale adjustment) |
Resources Metre stick? Measuring stick/ counting stick pupil whiteboards / pens |
Mental / Oral Activities Use a counting stick to count in tens from zero to 100cms on the top, and in decimal equivalents of one metre below. Use sticky labels to identify the key positions Ask the children what converting from a unit of measurement to another means. How can you convert from metres to centimetres? What would 2 metres be in centimetres? How many centimetres is equal to 5 metres? Using the counting stick to help, ask the children to convert 0.2 metres to centimetres. Now do the reverse. Convert 30cms to metres and so on… Talk about mixed units, i.e. 1.23 metres Can the children identify two other ways of stating the same fact 123cms, or 1m 23cms |
Key Vocabulary Metres Centimetres Convert Equivalent Dimensions |
Key Questions How many centimetres are equivalent to 0.9m? How many metres are equal to 75cms? Can you write 2m 18cms in two other ways? |
Main teaching Objectives To convert measurements to scale and construct scale drawings. Problem solving task incorporating enlargement. |
Resources Conversion chart, drawing materials, string or wool, squared paper. |
Main Activities Teacher role. (Using visual aid of Gateshead Millennium Bridge) Encourage estimation of bridge dimensions Introduce actual statistics on Millennium Bridge. Inform class of task to construct scale drawing of bridge. Take children through scale concept. Complete Conversion chart with scale set at 1cm to 10m (Children have 10 minutes to complete task) Gateshead Millennium Bridge Task Planning permission falls through! The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has to be sited further up the River Tyne. There are two possible sites. A is ½ the original dimension of the bridge. B is twice the original dimension. Your task is to construct these two new designs, using the same scale of 1cm to 10m and complete the conversion chart to check that your designs are accurate. |
Key Questions Why can’t we draw the bridge using the real measurements? What does scale allow us to do? What would these measurements be if the scale was 1m to… (give selection of examples) What do you expect the new designs to look like? |
Key Vocabulary Metric measurement Scale conversion Length Enlargement Reduction |
Plenary Complete prepared scale conversion chart which has missing metre and centimetre values. |
