British Pathe Archive ~ Schools Licence

The British Pathe Archive is now available over the broadband connection to teachers and pupils in Northern Grid’s eight partner LEAs . This arrangement, the first of its kind in the world, provides schools with access to 3,500 hours of digitised newsreel film covering events from the death of Victoria to the birth of space travel. It is for use by teachers and pupils in school and for collaboration between schools across the National Education Network. The provision of this wonderful resource is the outcome of a partnership between the Regional Broadband Consortia (the RBCs) and British Pathe and is provided to schools without charges for the next three years.

The 3,500 hours of film are available in high-quality versions to enable their use in whole-class teaching, with whiteboards, in ‘PowerPoints’ and for printing onto worksheets. In addition the archive provides 2,000,000 still photographs for teachers and pupils to work with. Uniquely, the RBC/British Pathe Schools Licence allows teachers and children to edit and re-present the material creatively and critically. The British Pathe Archive is of course just that – a full historical archive and not a set of resources pre-selected for school use; it contains reports on many aspects of life - celebrations, the environment, technology, politics, disasters and war. Teachers need to be aware of the range of material in the archive and take decisions about how best to use it with the children and students in their school.

The resources are provided within an agreement for Educational Use and are not for publication on the WWW, for use in commercial enterprises or for distribution beyond the school or the National Education Network environments. Schools are recommended to read the Terms and Conditions of the Schools Licence (see link below) and bring the attention of teachers and pupils to the Acceptable Usage that is required when using these archive materials.

Northern Grid has worked with teachers in the region to develop examples of the ways in which this resource can be used, as well as developing support materials and exchanging good practice. Some of the work produced in this project is available from the link below, as Pathe clips are not able to be used on the Internet this is a secure area which recognised IP addressed of schools in the partner LEAs. Northern Grid hopes that this area of the site will continue to grow and would welcome feedback and contributions.

The British Pathe website is accessible on the WWW at www.britishpathe.com where you can investigate the archive and download copies of the files.

We wish your school every success with using what we believe to be a truly inspiring teaching and learning resource and one which demonstrates the value of broadband services in meeting the aspirations of the next generation.

When downloading files from the archive a form giving details of the user needs to be completed and will be followed by an invoice. If you are accessing the resource over the broadband network this should automatically discount to zero.
