Plan
Introduce the group to the idea of joining together two pieces of timber to make something different. Ask the group how this could be accomplished.
Show them the materials and suggest a combination of materials being used, which ones?
Demonstrate constructing lap joints in the following ways:-
Glue gun glue
Panel pins
PVA glue
PVA glue and Card Triangles
Allow the glue to set and in the interim the students can draw the joints in their work book over the faint lines.
When the group have finished and glue has dried ask them to pick the joint that they think is the strongest. Why?
Describe the old saying about a chain only being as strong as its weakest link. What does that mean? Then string all the joints together and pull. Remove the first joint to break, re-string and pull.
Repeat until only one joint is left. This will invariably be the card reinforced joint, see if the students can explain how it won. If they cannot then give one of then a strip of card to snap under tension.
The students should then mark the joints in their rank order in their work books.
