Plan

Ask the students to face the board while sitting in their places.

Describe the buggy that they are about to begin to make. They will be supplied with a number of 600 mm lengths of jelutong but let them choose the section. They will be asked to consider the shape they would like to make. Draw on the board:-

Long and narrow, short and wide, a couple of buggies that fall between these. The students should now choose the shape they would like.

All of the students choose their timber and hold it balanced on their index fingers at each end. They then slide their index fingers together and mark the centre spot and cut their timber with a tenon saw. The two pieces are then named and taped together with best ends together. The uneven ends are then sanded level on the sander.

The students then choose where they will cut their timber, depending on the buggy they require. They mark and cut and then sand level. Their names should be added to all un named pieces.

Students now have the option of using card shapes to mount their wheels or drilling holes in the side members of their chassis to take the axles. Those who have chosen thin timber may be offered an extra piece of timber to thicken their side members at the point where the hole will be drilled, if they don't want to use card. The fixing of card triangles or drilling of holes should be performed with the side members joined so that the buggies roll straight. Holes may be altered to straighten them if skewed.

The tape is then removed and the buggy assembled using the students preferred joint. Continued on next sheet....................
