Title
Card Hats
Description
Year 10 Modified Curriculum

Objectives
To allow the students to design a card that suitable for carrying the logo of a firm which might give the hats away during a promotion. The students have to find one size that fits all, or at least most sizes. The hat must have a logo existing or student designed on the peak or other visible parts.
Equipment Required
Card sheet in assorted colours, other stationery tools and sundries.

Plan
Introduce the card hat to the students that they will no doubt have seen at the seaside or promotional events.
The students as a group must help work out the best size of hat to fit the majority of students in the class.
Measure all the heads and store length and width on a table, without names is probably the best method. The students may then try various sized holes in the paper perhaps by trying the largest sizes, the smallest sizes and perhaps the size midway between the two. They may also wish to try the average size. Average has to be explained to the group as from experience they are very unsure what it means.
Once the correct size is found (it is very difficult as the average size sometimes sits on top of the largest heads and drops over the smallest) a template should be made from paper.
The students should then work on the shape of the peak, no sharp points.
The thickness of the card on the rim should be considered as too much reduces the advertising space on the peak and too little, although optimising the peak, makes the rim so thin it tears. The students will need to use their judgement.
The logo should now be designed. The students may prefer to copy an existing logo or , much better in my view, design their own. Sports firms, car manufacturers, food and other such areas all provide suitable stimulation for logos.
The students should finally transfer their design onto card, carbon paper is of use here, and add the appropriate colours.
