Title

Fishing Floats

Description

Year 10 Modified Curriculum

Key Stage 4

Objectives

To design a number of fishing floats which would allow for the casting and suitable positioning of the bait and subsequent indication of a bite. The colour scheme should be considered so that the float can be seen against a variety of backgrounds in different weather conditions.

Equipment Required

Stationery items, general workshop tools and a supply of suitable balsa wood and possibly cane.

Plan

The students will be introduced to this method of fishing. They will have the areas fished described to them so that they should be able to design a set of four floats which will complement each other.

The floats should be designed on paper and coloured with felt tip, paint or crayon. A possible test for visibility could be to cut out the floats and hold them in front of different backgrounds to see how they show up.

Once the designs are complete the students should construct their set of four floats. It may be necessary to cut the balsa into sections, drill them and reassemble them on a piece of thin cane (stem) prior to shaping.

Once the floats are shaped and smoothed a wire eye may be added to the bottom of the stem with thread. Once colour has been added the floats should be finished with varnish.

The floats can be tested in water to see if they will 'cock' in the correct conditions i.e. laying on or weighted and perform their function correctly.
