Plan

Introduce the students to the problem in their work book. Vic, the school caretaker has to get across a flood which is between his house and the school.

You could use a similar idea in your own school.

What can they make to solve the caretakers problem? Suggestions can be drawn on the board and their feasibility discussed.

The students then sketch their suggested solutions in their work books. They can have a look at the available materials during this time to help them work out their ideas.

The students should pick the best idea or combine parts of several solutions to produce their final product. They may then begin to construct their solution.

Assistance will be given from this point, at an individual level or if the problem is of general interest the group will be gathered together and shown.

'Please Sir I need help' Will be answered by questioning the student about the problem and if that fails to help, hinting before giving a full help.

Simple curves will need to be cut and the coping saw will be demonstrated.

The completed project will have to be tested and a Lego man may need to be pressed into service to try out catapults (with parachute of course), or rope slides etc.

The project will have changed a little on the way and all modifications should be noted and stored in their work book.
