Plan

SAFETY...Toys suggest children and children suggests safety. No sharp edges, small easily swallowed pieces or harmful finishes.

Introduce the group to a selection of traditional toys :-
Sailer climbing strings, spinning moon/dolphin/ark/clown, yo yo, roundabout, woodpecker on a tree, break dancer etc. Can they think of any others? The important design points may have to be explained to the group such as the C of G for the spinning toys and the woodpeckers slightly loose grip on the tree.

The students should have seen MDF in the workshop before but should be shown it now and its characteristics described as it will form part of most students workpieces.

The students should sketch their chosen toy in their work book and produce a number of drawings to produce their final solution. They should suggest a work plan for how they will go about making their project.

The students should then mark out their piece of work and start construction. Squared paper may be of assistance transferring designs from paper.

It is likely that compound curves will appear in someone's work and so the Hegner saw can be demonstrated.

The completed project will be expected to have a good finish and therefore will need to be glasspapered until smooth and colours and varnish added to complete it.

Any modifications will need to be noted in the students work book.
