The Northern Grid for Learning team have commissioned Inclusive Technology to produce an online application for students with PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties). The idea behind this software is to promote Inclusion and give these students access to appropriate software from the Internet which is accessible from mainstream ICT computer suitesand also from home. This software is © Northern Grid for Learning but is is FREE to use by schools other educational establishments and parents.
The application (SENSwitcher), is a progressive series of cause and effect screens utilising switch access (or keyboard). We believe this is the first time a fully comprehensive application covering cause and effect has been developed specifically to be used across the Internet. If using it across the Internet is unsuitable for you it can also be download and then the whole application can be run off line.
The application will run well even across a 56Kb dial-up Internet connection, although most schools now have ISDN lines which makes this a fully usable application and gives the opportunity for PMLD students to use a computer in any school with Internet access.
The application is written in Macromedia's Flash 5 program.
The application can be found by clicking on the Northern Grid for Learning Logo below
High speed Internet connection could have a real beneficial effect on the use of the Internet with SEN students. The present situation is not particularly useful to these students because of the slow access speeds. Most web pages are limited to still images and text. True multimedia Internet experiences may still be some way off and may never be able to complete with the speed of CD ROM's but things are changing fast. Satellite access is already with us and with local caching does enable full screen video. The potential for the development of SEN materials is enormous and if the high speed Internet access does anything it should promote inclusion as specialist software will be available anywhere there is Internet access.
Another application you may want to download is a small content free piece of software developed by a Teesside University student while on placement at Abbey Hill School Technology College.
