The Northern Grid for Learning team have commissioned Inclusive Technology to produce an online application for students with PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties). The idea behind this software is to promote Inclusion and give these students access to appropriate software from the Internet which is accessible from mainstream ICT computer suitesand also from home. This software is © Northern Grid for Learning but is is FREE to use by schools other educational establishments and parents.

The application (SENSwitcher), is a progressive series of cause and effect screens utilising switch access (or keyboard). We believe this is the first time a fully comprehensive application covering cause and effect has been developed specifically to be used across the Internet. If using it across the Internet is unsuitable for you it can also be download and then the whole application can be run off line.

The application will run well even across a 56Kb dial-up Internet connection, although most schools now have ISDN lines which makes this a fully usable application and gives the opportunity for PMLD students to use a computer in any school with Internet access.

The application is written in Macromedia's Flash 5 program.

Although SENSwitcher has been designed for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties it has also been suggested that it would be a useful application to use with very young students. It could be used with children who are just starting out with computers. The animation and the cause and effect simulations could be further enhanced if the application is used with an electronic whiteboard.
