Initial Checklist for Assessing Children as 'More Able'

1. Learns new facts/skills easily

2. Has quick mastery and recall of information

3. Informed in unusual areas, often beyond their years

4.  Has exceptional interest/curiosity

5.  Asks many provocative, searching questions

6.  Jumps stages in learning

7.   Reads well and retains what is read

8.   Has advanced understanding and use of Language

9.   Mental speed faster than physical capabilities

10.Is persistent in seeking task completion

11. Easily grasps underlying principles and needs the minimum of explanation

12. Is an independent worker, showing or taking the initiative

13. Shows leadership qualities

14. Able to make generalisations

15. Can move from concrete to abstract

16. Recognises deeper significance in a story or file

17. Good judgement, logical

18. Criticises constructively

19.  A keen and alert observer

20.  Musical/Artistic - original, imaginative, creative

21. Has a keen sense of humour/ Appreciates verbal puns, jokes, sees humour in the unusual

22. Shows exceptional ability to express him/her self - verbally fluent, outstanding vocabulary

23. Socially adept

24. Is unwilling to accept authoritarian pronouncements without critical examination

25. Reluctant to practise skills already mastered

26. Exhibits unusually extroverted or introverted behaviour within a group

27. Listens only to part of an explanation

28. When interested can become absorbed for periods

29. Speed and agility of thought /Preference for verbal rather than written expression

30. Shows a high level of sensitivity/empathy

This is a list of characteristics which may be displayed by an exceptionally able child. If only one or two of these points are applicable, the child is worthy of further consideration for the Register.
